638 Santa Ray, Oakland

Today we feature a large and imposing prairie style home off Lakeshore Avenue. From the outside the house displays the characteristic broad and low eaves and rows of windows that one expects to find in prairie homes in the Bay Area. The horizontality is further enhanced by a pair of protruding bands that circumnavigate the house between the two levels. Inside, the generously scaled rooms are full of wonderful unpainted woodwork. Here again, the horizontality is reinforced by the very broad crown at the top of all the walls. The parlor or library under the stair is a particularly nice space with its fully paneled walls and ceiling, and though the kitchen and baths have been remodeled, the finishes chosen are excellent and do not detract from the rest of the house.
