Today we feature a nice woodsy mid-century in the Berkeley hills. The home is not particularly exceptional from the street. It is a simple box with deep overhanging eaves and a jutting bay with raised roof at the living room. Inside, however the spaces are compelling. The raised roof over the living room allows for the creation of dual clerestories which open the room to the outside. The dark wood roof structure is exposed through most of the upper floor and embellished with numerous craftsman lanterns. The juxtaposition of the modern structure with the turn of the century details reminds us of the great debt that bay region modernism owes to the earliest bay region designers.
