This Elmwood shingle-style craftsman has an interesting façade and an exceptional living room. The living room is particularly unusual because it is made up of a central area surrounded by a number of subordinate spaces that are dedicated to specific activities. One such space is set aside for the fireplace and inglenooks, and one for the small library space. These ‘chapels’ or antechambers are separated visually from the main living room by a low beam that circumnavigates the room above the doors and is tied into the box beam ceiling by vertical decorative elements. It is really a very considered and successful means of creating distinct areas within a room while leaving the space as a whole intact.
