1117 Morton, Alameda

Charles Shaner was the architect and builder of choice for the wealthy of Alameda during the Victorian era. His homes were among the most expensive built on the island at the time, some even approaching (get this) $5,000. Clearly there has been a bit of inflation in the intervening years as this home which was probably built for closer to $4,000 is being offered today for over two hundred times that amount –and it seems like a decent deal at that.

The home is wonderfully preserved and is simply overflowing with great details – the turret, the fish scale shingles, the curved bay – there is a little something for everyone, and that is just on the outside. Inside it is equally lavish with obscenely high ceilings, period light fixtures, multiple fireplaces, loads of original woodwork, and some truly amazing stained glass.
