Today we feature an interesting Montclair mid-century with some serious cantilevers. The home is made up of a series of boxes each of which is supported on large tapered concrete beams which appear balanced on massive concrete shear walls. The effect is impressive and it allows the entire living room to extend out over the carport with no apparent means of support. The home loosely follows the terrain on which it is built, with the public rooms on one level, and the bedrooms on two more levels each separated by a few steps. This variation in elevation not only makes for great separation of space but it also creates unusual opportunities for clerestory windows at interior walls.
