Warren Callister is best known for his woodsy custom mid-century homes and for his beautiful chapel at Mills College. His work is uniformly thoughtful and impressive and tends to have a rather recognizable overt verticality. The home we feature today is in some ways not typical of the bulk of his work, but it remains impressive nonetheless. It is a late example and it is designed in a decidedly Third Bay Region style with a lower center of gravity than most of his homes and a rather blocky countenance. But Callister still manages to work in a number of interesting vertical elements and enough raw wood to make it his own. It is compelling proof that his talent for creating dramatic interior spaces and connecting them seamlessly with the spaces outside is not confined to a single idiom.
