973 Keeler, Berkeley

Today we feature a modest mid-century cottage designed by long time Berkeley professor Winfield Scott Wellington. Wellington was a contemporary of William Wurster and a similar Second Bay Region appreciation for the understated can be seen in much of his work. This particular home has a single bedroom and a very straight-forward structure, but this simplicity is put on display in a way that makes it feel quite lavish. The warm redwood walls, large windows, copper fireplace, and exposed roof trusses all contribute to its overall presence which is at once intimate and spacious at the same time.
