127 Hagar, Piedmont

Last month we saw an exceptional new modern re-creation of an older home undertaken by Chris Parlette of WA Design on Camelia Street in Berkeley. This month we are pleased to have an equally striking reimagining at the hands of Swatt Miers Architects in Piedmont. Robert Swatt distinguished himself in the early 90s for his relatively understated postmodern residences, but in the last ten years, his aesthetic has veered sharply toward new modern with impressive results. His homes are more stoic and refined than the work of WA Design which is generally somewhat playful and slightly industrial. Swatt favors a horizontal arrangement of boxy volumes clad alternately in wood and concrete or stucco with deep overhangs and plenty of glazing. Wood ceilings that cross from inside the house to out are also a favorite device that we see used here as well. All in all it is another nice example of new work by a well-respected East Bay architect.
