2963 Gibbons, Alameda

The home du jour is an extravagantly detailed Spanish colonial revival located in the island community of Alameda. Alameda is perhaps best known for its Victorian homes, but there are plenty of period revivals along its bucolic boulevards as well. This is particularly true in the Fernside neighborhood which was subdivided in 1925 by Oakland developer Fred T Wood. The Fernside home we visit today is simply overflowing with great wrought iron, rough-hewn beams, and numerous other characteristically Spanish details. The homes in Fernside were designed by a veritable who’s who of East Bay architects at the time so it is difficult to guess who might be responsible, but the spaces are certainly nice and the embellishments are well executed.
