606 Grizzly Peak, Berkeley

Architect John Rolf Hattam has been a fixture in Berkeley for many years, designing numerous residential and commercial structures over his long career; but of all those we have had the opportunity to visit, the late sixties mid-century that we feature today may be the one we like best.

The home is sited on Grizzly Peak but the front door is set down the hill from the street behind a low wall making the passing cars less intrusive. There is a great custom screen at the door that sets the stage for the impressive interiors which are characterized by large expanses of wood and glass throughout. The spaces are thoughtfully arranged with good separation of public and private, plenty of built-in storage, and nicely framed views.
