12900 Skyline, Oakland

Hewitt Clark Jr.’s successful architectural practice was based around Lake Tahoe in the 50s and 60s, but his parents were longtime residents of Berkeley so we are fortunate to have a number of his impressive homes here in the East Bay. The one we feature today is a particularly nice example in the Hillcrest Estates neighborhood of Oakland. The home has a truly staggering amount of glazing. Some rooms have almost no solid walls creating an amazing continuity between inside and out and laying the underlying skeleton of the post and beam structure bare for all to see. Clark’s characteristic linear grid patterns are apparent throughout and make a great compliment to the wood paneling and other intact period embellishments that fill the home.

I worked with Hewitt in the 60’s at Lake Tahoe, are there any archives (drawings) existing?
