This stately colonial revival foursquare is attributed to Joseph Cather Newsom, and while it is not executed in the high Queen Anne style for which he and his brother Samuel are best known, it is definitely detailed with a certain flourish not usually seen in homes of this style.

There were actually a number of different but related Newsom brothers that practiced architecture around the turn of the last century so it is sometimes difficult to pinpoint the responsible parties. By 1908 when this home was built, Joseph Cather Newsom was practicing on his own and Samuel was in partnership with his sons Sidney and Noble. Joseph is known to have designed a number of houses in Oakland that year so it is quite possible this could be one of them.
