Henry Hill was the rare modernist who enjoyed adding a bit of flash to each of his homes. He reveled in the theatricality of unexpected combinations of color and texture and cast aside the notion that modernism need necessarily be staid and stolid.

The home we feature today would have been one of the first that he designed after returning to the Bay Area after World War II and already his fondness of gold and of latticework and interesting light fixtures is readily apparent. Hill would go on to design nearly 500 homes over his long career and his impact on the shape of domestic architecture in the Bay Area is difficult to overestimate.
