Raymond Blackwell was born in Texas and grew up in Southern California before coming to Berkeley for architecture school. He had his own small firm starting in the 40s but never gained a great deal of recognition for his work which is a shame because as we can see from this Oakland home he was quite talented. The home has wonderfully constructed spaces with towering walls of glass and clerestory lights. It is a mid-century that retains a sense of openness and verticality that is not always present in residences from this period.
