63 La Cuesta, Orinda

This sizable Spanish colonial is a nice example of the type of handsome period revival country homes that proliferated in Orinda at the start of its growth as a town. The home was designed by William Avery Rich, whose work we don’t see too frequently but who obviously had a good grasp of the architectural idioms of the day. His detailing is lavish but not as ostentatious as some of his contemporaries which makes for a particularly charming and well-balanced composition.

William Avery Rich was my husband’s grandfather and it was nice to see this posted on Facebook today by a cousin.
