Arthur Herman is not an architect widely known today, but for many years he and Paul Hammarberg had a very successful practice together in the East Bay. Their designs were thoughtful but fairly understated which made their work accessible to a wide variety of clients. Both Herman and Hammarberg ended up designing homes for themselves in Lafayette and the one we feature here today has been in the Herman family since it was built. In many ways it is a more adventurous design than much of the firm’s output for other clients and it is exceptionally well preserved – an unusually nice example from another lesser known East Bay architect.
