Fremont is not generally known for its historic homes, but in fact it was one of the earliest settlements in the Bay Area. One of the towns that would become modern day Fremont was called Niles and it was the first home of the fledgling movie industry in California. Charlie Chaplin lived there for a short period and a number of the most famous films from the silent era were shot in the area. The charming bungalow that we feature here today was not built until shortly after the film studios had shut down, but it is extremely well-preserved and is a nice indication of the type of residence that filled the streets of Niles during that period.
