Our featured home today is the first of many handsome residences that Walter Steilberg built on Panoramic Hill. He designed it for his own family at a time when he was still working for Julia Morgan, but just a few years later he would open his own extremely successful practice. In the years that followed he would design so many homes on Panoramic Hill that it has become known as Steilberg Country much like the area around Buena Vista is known as Maybeck Country. This early example already boasts many features that would become trademarks of his work including the unusual application of Asian-inspired motifs to a typically craftsman framework. It is an intriguing look at the roots of Steilberg’s individual style in its nascent form.
