18 Oakvale, Berkeley

This exceptional Berkeley residence is an intriguing period revival home with distinctly First Bay Region detailing. It was designed and built by Kenneth Shipp for his family and it is an unusually personal piece of craftsmanship. Shipp was not an architect or a builder, nor was he originally from the Bay Area, but his home is one of the most fully realized expressions of Bay Region period revival design. His job as manager of a building supply company gave him unequalled access to a variety materials and an intimate knowledge of the latest building techniques and architectural styles popular at the time. The result is a truly unique and unexpectedly thoughtful home.
