Charles Collin was a Berkeley architect who focused mainly on commercial and institutional structures so we don’t encounter his homes very often, but this unusually vertical mid-century is a good indication of his talent as a designer. The plan is surprisingly open for the period, with the living room signified by a slight elevation change and separated from the entrance by the stairs. The thoughtfully arranged spaces allow the light from the towering walls of glass in the public rooms to flood into the private spaces above. It’s a rare treat from a lesser known local architect.
