- Edificionado is an Oakland-based real estate brokerage specializing in architecturally and historically significant homes. The listings we feature here are those that have recently caught our eye due to their provenance or exceptional state of preservation. We select them without regard to size, price, or location and in general we are not the listing broker, so we have no stake in their being posted here. As we are based in Oakland, most of the homes will be in the East Bay, though we may throw one in from elsewhere in the Bay Area from time to time. If you would like to visit any of these homes, or receive a personalized list of properties more tailored to your specific requirements and tastes please contact Christian Olson at colson@edificionado.com or at 510 686 3343.

735 Cragmont, Berkeley
This impressive modernist residence is the work of Don Olsen who was one of the few Bay Area designers to embrace the international style that was much more prevalent in other parts of the country. His homes stand out here … Continue reading
143 Calvert, Oakland
Edward Killingsworth was a Southern California architect perhaps best known for his Case Study Houses. There are very few of his homes up here in the North, so it is nice to see this thoughtful International Style on the edge … Continue reading
771 San Diego, Berkeley
It has been almost five years since Donald Olsen passed away, but the impact that he had on the architecture of the Bay Area is still palpable. Olsen cut his own path at a time when modernism in Northern California … Continue reading
861 Regal, Berkeley
Today we feature a spare and beautiful mid-century residence designed by Donald Olsen. Olsen studied under Walter Gropius on the East Coast and was one of only a few local architects to embrace international style design rather than the home-grown … Continue reading
7756 Hillmont, Oakland
Good international style homes are not especially common in Eastmont Hills, so this one is a real treat. The façade is a straightforward rectilinear box of glass floating over the carport. Inside, some of the original contrasting textures have been … Continue reading

115 Pershing, Oakland
This showy international style residence is another of Donald Olsen’s trademark modernist gems. It has seen a bit of recent updating, but the spirit of the home is definitely still intact and the high contrast paint scheme serves to highlight … Continue reading
256 The Uplands, Berkeley
This exceptional international style residence is one of the most creative of the local homes designed by Donald Olsen. The unusual site and large trees forced Olsen out of his normal “box” and the result is two distinct pavilions linked … Continue reading
1494 Solano, Albany
We don’t often feature multi-unit properties here, but this boxy international style building in Albany was too intriguing to pass up. Its flat façade of alternating masonry and glass seems to float above the ground creating an unusually striking impression … Continue reading
1200 Hawthorne, Alameda
This impressive late modernist residence is in an unexpected location on the island of Alameda. Most of the post bay fill development on the island in the second half of the last century was done by tract builders, but this … Continue reading

339 Western, Richmond
This interesting home has seen a bit of modification over the years but it was originally one of the few homes in the Bay Area designed by International Style ambassador Serge Chermayeff during his brief stay here. Chermayeff was a … Continue reading
